On Friday, May 23, the President of Mozambique and Commander-in-Chief of the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM), Daniel Chapo, presided over the graduation ceremony of 525 Mozambican troops who completed an advanced infantry course conducted by instructors from the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF). The ceremony took place at the Nacala Training Center in Nampula Province, marking the conclusion of a rigorous six-month training program. President Chapo conveyed his appreciation to the President of the Republic of Rwanda and RDF for their support to Mozambique in sending their troops to support Mozambique in establishing peace, security and stability in Northern province of Cabo Delgado. He also commended the RDF’s significant contribution to Mozambique’s fight against terrorism. “ A course of this nature was last conducted in 2011 by the United States of America (USA) force in Mozambique. “It is a rare opportunity to have an allied country train a country’s forces: FADM and Mozambique greatly appreciate this effort .” President said. He also congratulated the trainees who completed the course for their effort. He reminded them that training never ends and that they must use the acquired skills to work towards maintaining security and stability of Mozambique. The ceremony featured tactical demonstrations, with graduates showcasing their skills in simulated counter-terrorism scenarios and Special Operations Forces tactics, a testament to RDF’s effective training. The inclusion of six female operatives underscored the program’s alignment with Rwanda’s values of inclusivity in defense. This graduation builds on the RDF’s ongoing support in Cabo Delgado since 2021, where Rwanda Security Force have significantly weakened Islamic State-linked insurgents. The RDF’s efforts, supported by regional and international partners, continue to strengthen bilateral ties and advance peace, positioning the graduates to protect communities and drive Mozambique’s stability forward. Trainees mastered counter-terrorism operations, urban warfare, and precision strikes, alongside skills in close-quarters combat, covert reconnaissance, hostage rescue, and rapid-response tactics against asymmetric threats to ensure readiness for complex security challenges. Rwanda first deployed troops to Cabo Delgado in July 2021 at the request of the Mozambican government to help to combat an Islamic State-linked insurgency. Working alongside Mozambican forces, Rwandan troops have been instrumental in stabilizing previously affected districts. As a result, security has improved across much of the province. Schools are reopening, displaced residents are returning home, and terrorist fighters have retreated into remote forested areas. Rwandan Security Forces continue to support Mozambique in restoring state authority in Cabo Delgado through ongoing combat operations, security missions, and participation in stabilization and security sector reform initiatives.
