On Friday, May 25, 2025, in Northland Shopping Centre, northeast of Melbourne, the violent dispute involving around 10 individuals has caused a temporary lockdown due to an immense fight among them, resulting to one seriously injured man staying hospitalized. Emergency services were called to the Murray Road shopping area in Preston shortly after 2:30pm following reports of a fight between opposing groups. The eyewitnesses say, “chaos erupted as some individuals were allegedly armed with machetes, eliciting fear among shoppers and staff”. As reported by SSB News, one man had been taken to hospital in a serious condition, while the police immediately placed the shopping centre under lockdown for public safety concerns, and two people have been arrested, including a 15-years old boy who was taken into custody directly from the scene. In the Sunday evening press conference, Superintendent Kelly Lawson announced that "there was two rival gangs," and added that it was not a random fight, it was pre-planned and perhaps an act of revenge. "They had a pre-meeting to meet up at the shopping centre where there was an affray, so in effect, a fight between those two rival gangs. This was not just some random thing that happened. It was a pre-organised gang meet-up." Superintendent Lawson revealed as reported by SSB News. The Victoria Police spokesperson also announced that the investigations are underway to track the other accomplices, and the police is calling for eyewitnesses or any individual with camera footage of the incident to assist in the investigation. “Such violence in a public place is deeply concerning. We are working to establish the circumstances and identify those others involved.” She spoke. There are around 40 youth gangs in Victoria, which Lawson said, they are doing whatever possible to weaken their growth. Despite the lockdown, the shoppers have been allowed to depart the area, and no additional injuries or brawls have been reported yet.
