January 2026 in London- UK it was a milestone moment for Anglicanism as Dame Sarah Mullally was been officially confirmed as the first ever woman to lead the Church of England, the mother church of the global Anglican Communion in its nearly half a millenium history. Her confirmation as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury took place in a traditional ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, marking the end of a long process of election and formalizing her role as the spiritual leader for millions of Anglicans worldwide. Sarah Mullally succeeds Justin Welby who resigned in late 2024. Before entering formal ministry, Mullally built a distinguished career in public health serving as Chief Nursing Officer for England, a background she brings into her leadership with an emphasis on pastoral care and compassion. Her appointment follows key reforms within the Church of England like women were first ordained as priests in 1994 and allowed to become bishops back in 2014 paving the way for Mullally’s historic elevation.

Dame Sarah Mullally, Anglican Archbishop
“This is not about me, but about a church called to unity and service,” Mullally said in her first remarks after the confirmation ceremony, where she pledged to advance a ministry of hospitality and healing in a divided world. The Anglican Communion traces its roots back to the English Reformation in the 16th century, when King Henry VIII established a church separate from Rome. Over centuries, Anglicanism spread globally through British colonial history and now includes about 85 million members in more than 165 countries. The Archbishop of Canterbury, while not a pope-like figure with governing authority over all Anglicans, is widely recognized as the Communion’s spiritual leader and first among other bishops. Mullally’s formal enthronement at Canterbury Cathedral is scheduled on 25
th
March this year, when she will begin her public ministry in the ancient seat of the Church’s spiritual leadership.
