The Alliance Fleuve Congo / Mouvement du 23 Mars (AFC/M23) has officially confirmed the death of Colonel Willy Ngoma, a senior officer of the Congolese Revolutionary Army (ARC). According to a statement released by the group, Ngoma was killed on February 24, 2026, in a drone strike carried out by Kinshasa forces far from the front lines. The communiqué states that Colonel Ngoma was not engaged in combat at the time of his death, but was overseeing humanitarian operations for civilians displaced by ongoing conflict. The AFC/M23 described the attack as a “flagrant violation of the ceasefire” and condemned it as a direct blow to ongoing de-escalation efforts. The group also highlighted the broader human toll of Kinshasa’s military actions, citing civilian casualties in multiple areas across North and South Kivu, including Kawele, Mweso, Rubaya, Kalehe, Gasovu, and Minembwe, among others. Despite repeated warnings issued to partners in the peace process, the AFC/M23 said the regime in Kinshasa has “deliberately ignored” these concerns. The statement emphasized that the memory of Colonel Ngoma and other victims compels the group to continue its commitment to civilian protection and the pursuit of justice and peace. The communiqué was signed by Lawrence Kanyuka, Head of the Department of Communication for AFC/M23, and issued from Goma on February 28, 2026.
