2026, African Heads of State officially inaugurated President Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi as the new Chairperson of the African Union. Succeeding Angola’s João Lourenço, Ndayishimiye inherits a continent at a crossroads like navigating the polycrisis of regional conflicts in Sudan and the DRC while simultaneously launching a transformative continental agenda centered on water, sanitation, and technological sovereignty. In his remarks after being the new Chairperson of the African Union, President Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi said; "Africa has immense potential. My mandate will be anchored in diplomatic normalization and ensuring that water security becomes a catalyst for bringing our states together, rather than a source of division."

The official theme for 2026 summit was, “Ensuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems to achieve the goals of Agenda 2063,” reframed water from a basic necessity to a driver of peace and economic stability. Leaders noted that water related diseases claim 115 lives every hour in Africa, costing the continent billions in lost productivity. The Assembly reaffirmed its "zero tolerance" as well for unconstitutional changes of government and adopted a new memorandum of understanding on the African standby force to improve regional military coordination in the Sahel and horn of Africa. Another major takeaway was the unified push for UN Security Council reform. Leaders argued that the exclusion of Africa, now a permanent member of the G20 from permanent UN seats is indefensible. "This is 2026 not 1946. The absence of permanent African seats in the security council is indefensible. Whenever decisions about the world are on the table, Africa must be at the table." António Guterres, UN Secretary General said during the summit.

As the delegates depart Addis Ababa, the success of the 39th AU Summit will ultimately be measured not by the eloquence of its declarations, but by the speed of its implementation.
