The African Union (AU) has appointed Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to lead mediation efforts aimed at ending the conflict between Sudan’s Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the AU said on Thursday. The appointment was announced after the AU Peace and Security Council held its 1,308th extraordinary meeting on October 28. The council asked the AU Commission Chairperson to work closely with Museveni’s team to start talks between the warring parties. Fighting between SAF and RSF has escalated in recent weeks, particularly around El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, where the RSF has been accused of killings, abuses and blocking humanitarian aid. Local reports say about 1,500 people have been killed in El Fasher in the past four days, and thousands more have fled their homes. The United Nations has condemned widespread sexual violence and child deaths resulting from the conflict, which began in April 2023. Museveni is expected to lead efforts to secure an immediate ceasefire and reopen humanitarian corridors. The AU said it also plans to organize inclusive political talks to restore peace and stability in Sudan. The war has killed more than 24,000 people and displaced over 13 million, according to UN estimates.
