Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has started a six-day visit to China to strengthen relations between the two countries. The visit runs from Saturday, 12 July to Friday, 18 July 2025. Prime Minister Albanese is visiting China at the invitation of Premier Li Qiang. During the trip, he will take part in the Australia–China Annual Leaders’ Meeting in Beijing. He will also meet with President Xi Jinping and Chairman Zhao Leji of the National People’s Congress. The leaders will talk about important global and regional issues. They will also discuss how to improve cooperation in trade, tourism, and other areas that benefit both nations. Prime Minister Albanese said that China remains Australia’s biggest trading partner and accounts for nearly one third of Australia’s total trade. “Trade is now flowing freely, to the benefit of both countries and to people and businesses on both sides,” Albanese said in a statement. He also explained that Australia will keep working for a stable relationship with China, and that open dialogue is central to this goal. "My government will continue to cooperate with China where we can, disagree where we must, and engage in our national interest," Albanese said. During the visit, the Prime Minister and Chinese leaders will attend the Australia–China CEO Roundtable. This event brings together business leaders from both countries to encourage more trade and investment. Prime Minister Albanese will also travel to Shanghai and Chengdu. There, he will meet with representatives from business, tourism, and sports sectors to further build strong economic and cultural ties. This is Prime Minister Albanese’s second visit to China as Australia’s leader. In November 2023, Albanese became the first Australian leader visit China in seven years - ending a hiatus triggered by a string of disputes including various Chinese sanctions on Australian goods, and back and forth accusations of foreign interference. At the end of the visit, Australia and China signed agreements to boost cooperation in several areas including trade and investment to promote smoother trade flows and attract investment, tourism with plans to encourage more travel between the two countries, education and research to support student exchanges and joint research projects, and climate change through cooperation on clean energy solutions and environmental protection.
