Australia has officially recognised the State of Palestine as an independent and sovereign nation, in a historic announcement made on Sunday, 21 September 2025. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the decision reflects Australia’s belief in the “legitimate and long-held aspirations of the people of Palestine to a state of their own.” The move was made in coordination with Canada and the United Kingdom, which also announced recognition of Palestine on the same day. The three nations said their aim is to help restart momentum for a two-state solution, beginning with a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages taken during the attacks of October 7, 2023. Albanese said recognition is part of Australia’s longstanding position that peace can only be achieved if Israelis and Palestinians are able to live side by side. “A two-state solution has always been the only path to enduring peace and security for both peoples,” he said. Australia’s decision comes with clear expectations for the Palestinian Authority. Its leadership has reaffirmed Israel’s right to exist and given direct promises to Australia, including commitments to hold democratic elections and to carry out reforms in finance, governance, and education. The Prime Minister made it clear that “Hamas must have no role in Palestine.” While full diplomatic steps such as the opening of embassies are yet to be taken, Mr Albanese said they will be considered as the Palestinian Authority shows progress on its promises. International efforts are already underway to create a peace plan that would rebuild Gaza, strengthen the institutions of a Palestinian state, and guarantee Israel’s security. PM Albanese noted the importance of cooperation with Arab League countries and the United States in achieving these goals. “This is about bringing the Middle East closer to lasting peace and security,” the Prime Minister said. “It is the hope, and the right, of all humanity.”
