This represents the largest amount of cocaine ever seized at Bulgaria’s land borders, the National Customs Agency (NCA) said in a press release. According to an official statement from the Bulgarian Customs Agency, the Haskovo District Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges against J.M., a 40-year-old citizen of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who was traveling on a diplomatic passport. Reports indicate that he served as the second conseiller at the DRC embassy accredited to Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Two other individuals, D.H., a 43-year-old Bulgarian national, and D.A., a 54-year-old Belgian citizen born in the Republic of the Congo, were also arrested during the operation. The three suspects have been charged with attempting to transport a high-risk narcotic substance across Bulgaria’s southern border into Turkey without proper authorization, in violation of the country’s strict anti-narcotics trafficking laws. While the specific type of drug has not been officially disclosed, authorities have classified it as a “high-risk narcotic,” with a preliminary estimated street value of around \$50 million, according to officials familiar with the investigation. The arrests were made in the southern region of Haskovo, a major transit point along the Balkan route, which is frequently used by international drug trafficking networks. The Bulgarian Customs Agency and the Prosecutor’s Office stated that the operation was part of an ongoing effort to combat organized cross-border drug trafficking.
