Residents of Russia’s Belgorod region are living through growing fear and darkness as Ukrainian drone and missile attacks intensify, triggering blackouts and air-raid sirens almost daily. Once largely shielded from the direct consequences of the war, Belgorod has now become a frontline community facing escalating cross-border strikes. “It’s so loud and terrifying,” says Nina, a resident who recalls hiding under an arch as bursts of automatic gunfire erupted during an air raid. “The next day, it all happened again explosions and air defence fire everywhere.” According to BBC News Russian, Ukrainian drone attacks on the region have increased nearly fourfold since January 2025 from around 1,100 to over 4,000 in September. In one of the largest strikes last month, more than 260 drones targeted the area, while missile attacks have also surged. Kyiv says the escalation is retaliation for Russia’s relentless bombardment of Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure. President Volodymyr Zelensky warned earlier this month, “If they want to leave us without power, then we will do the same.”

Belgorod, a crucial logistics hub for Russian forces near the Ukrainian border, has been hit particularly hard. Missiles damaged the city’s main heat and power plant, leaving around 77,000 residents roughly 5% of the population without electricity. “It’s complete darkness outside,” says Natalya, another resident. “You can’t even see where your stop is.”

Neighbourhoods of Belgorod lost power after a missile strike and power cut in October
Fuel shortages have worsened the crisis, with local authorities urging citizens to buy generators despite skyrocketing prices and limited fuel supply. For many, the war once felt distant. But now, Belgorod’s residents face constant reminders of it power cuts, shortages, and fear. “By continuing this war,” says Yakov, “Russia is racing headlong toward the abyss.”
