A powerful coastal low-pressure system is set to batter parts of eastern Australia over the coming days, with authorities warning of damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and hazardous surf from southern Queensland to the south coast of New South Wales.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has issued a severe weather alert covering a wide stretch of the east coast, forecasting wind gusts exceeding 90km/h across affected regions. The timing and intensity of the winds will vary depending on location, officials say, according to The Guardian. “For communities south of the Central Tablelands and the Hunter region, including metropolitan Sydney, wind speeds are expected to increase significantly from Tuesday afternoon and continue into the evening,” the BoM stated. “Further north, including parts of southern Queensland, conditions will deteriorate from late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.”

Winds Could Exceed 125km/h in Some Areas

In addition to widespread damaging winds, localized destructive gusts over 125km/h are possible, particularly along Sydney’s eastern suburbs and coastal areas stretching south towards the Illawarra and the NSW South Coast. “These wind gusts have the potential to cause serious damage to property and infrastructure,” meteorologists warned. The heaviest rainfall is expected in areas south of Wollongong, where six-hour rainfall totals could reach up to 120mm, triggering risks of flash flooding and riverine inundation. “While Sydney may also experience heavy rain, the most intense falls are likely further south,” the BoM advised. Lighter rainfall is forecast in northern areas, but not to the same extent.

Dangerous Surf and Coastal Hazards Expected

Authorities have also flagged coastal hazards, warning that dangerous surf conditions will develop throughout the afternoon and evening. The hazardous conditions will first affect the coastline between Seal Rocks and the Illawarra, eventually extending southwards to the Victorian border overnight. Large waves and powerful swells could lead to coastal erosion and pose serious risks for beachgoers. “People are urged to avoid beaches and exposed coastal areas as the system strengthens,” the BoM said.
