The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have captured a major base belonging to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorists, in Apakwang, Ituri Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). According to a statement issued by Colonel Chris Magezi, Military Assistant to the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), the offensive was launched last Sunday with coordinated air and artillery strikes, paving the way for a ground assault that culminated in the seizure of the camp on Thursday, 10 July 2025. Magezi said this was a huge base that “accommodated between 1,000 to 1,500 ADF terrorists and their families.” He said it was under the control of Musa Baluku, the leader of the ADF. He added that Ugandan forces also overran large food gardens containing rice, beans, and cassava—resources that were sustaining the rebel network. The development follows weeks of intensified joint operations between the UPDF and the FARDC (Forces Armées de la République Démocratique du Congo), who are cooperating under a bilateral security agreement renewed earlier this year to eliminate armed groups in eastern DRC. In November 2021 by the armed forces of Uganda ,UPDF, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo ,FARDC, launched a joint military operation , Operation Shujaa, to target the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an Islamist extremist rebel group responsible for numerous attacks and massacres in eastern DRC and linked to ISIS. The operation involves airstrikes, artillery bombardments, and ground offensives mainly in North Kivu and Ituri provinces, aiming to dismantle ADF camps, cut off supply lines, and restore security in the region.
