More than 50 civilians were brutally killed during a funeral attack by Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) fighters in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, officials confirmed. The assault happened on Monday night in the village of Ntoyo, Lubero territory, North Kivu province. Armed with machetes and guns, the attackers struck mourners gathered at a ceremony around 9 p.m. “I can confirm a provisional death toll of 50. Most victims were killed with machetes,” said Macaire Sivikunula, a local administrator. He added that search operations are ongoing. Colonel Alain Kiwewa, the military administrator of Lubero, told Reuters the toll could rise above 60 as many people remain missing. The ADF, originally an armed group from Uganda, has operated in Congo since the late 1990s. It is now recognized as an affiliate of the Islamic State (ISIS). In recent months, the ADF has carried out several deadly assaults across eastern Congo. Last month, they killed more than 50 civilians in multiple raids. In July, an attack on a church left 38 people dead. In November 2021, Uganda’s army (UPDF) and Congo’s forces (FARDC) launched Operation Shujaa, a joint military campaign targeting the ADF. The operation has included airstrikes, artillery fire, and ground offensives in North Kivu and Ituri provinces. The goal is to dismantle ADF camps, disrupt supply networks, and restore stability in the region. Despite these efforts, the group continues to launch large-scale attacks on civilians.
