Referee Víctor García Verdura reported that a number of half-full plastic bottles were thrown from sections of the Espanyol support near the players’ tunnel as Barcelona’s players celebrated. No injuries were reported and none of the objects struck players or officials, but the incidents were officially logged. Stadium announcements were made urging supporters to stop the behaviour, a factor that will be considered by Spain’s disciplinary authorities. The Spanish Football Federation’s Disciplinary Committee is now expected to review the referee’s report. Espanyol are at particular risk because of previous crowd-related incidents, including a suspended sanction from an earlier case involving objects being thrown from the stands. Spanish media suggest that the club could face a fine or a partial stadium closure, although a full ban is considered less likely given that no serious harm was caused.
