European leaders are set to visit the United States early next week for high-level discussions on how to end the war in Ukraine, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Saturday. “Certain European leaders are coming over to our country on Monday or Tuesday individually,” Trump said, though he did not specify which leaders would attend. He added that he also planned to speak “soon” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, signaling a new push for diplomatic engagement. The visit comes after Russia launched its largest aerial assault of the war, firing at least 810 drones and 13 missiles across Ukraine. Four people were killed, and for the first time, Kyiv’s main government building was struck. Trump described himself as “not happy with the whole situation” and said his administration was preparing a second phase of sanctions on Moscow. He has also floated the idea of imposing secondary tariffs on countries that continue to trade with Russia, in an effort to further restrict the Kremlin’s war financing. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the moves, calling sanctions and tariffs “the right idea.” Speaking to ABC News, he urged Europe to fully sever its energy ties with Moscow. “We have to stop buying any kind of energy from Russia, and by the way, anything, any deals with Russia. We can’t have any deals if we want to stop them,” Zelensky said. Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and now controls just under 20% of its territory. The Donbas region made up of Luhansk and Donetsk has been partly occupied since 2014. Moscow now holds almost all of Luhansk and about 70% of Donetsk. The upcoming meetings in Washington are expected to focus on sanctions, energy policy, and potential diplomatic steps, as Russia intensifies its military campaign following last month’s Trump-Putin summit in Alaska.
