Former President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Joseph Kabila, has arrived in Goma, a city in eastern DRC currently under the control of the M23/AFC coalition, according to Corneille Nangaa, leader of the political-military alliance. The announcement was made in a statement shared by Nangaa on X on Monday, May 26. He welcomed Kabila’s arrival, calling it a "wise decision." “The Coordination of the Congo River Alliance (AFC_M23) is pleased to welcome the former President of the Republic and Senator for Life, Mr. Joseph Kabila Kabange, to Goma, in his home country,” Nangaa wrote. He emphasized that Goma is currently the only part of the country free from arbitrariness, political persecution, death sentences, tribalism, discrimination, and hate speech. According to Nangaa, since February 2025, Goma has hosted several delegations and prominent figures who have witnessed what he described as the “restoration of security for people and their property” under AFC/M23 governance. “Goma had the privilege of receiving the blessing of spiritual leaders during the visit of a high-level joint ECC-CENCO delegation,” he added. Nangaa also criticized the Kinshasa government, referring to its leaders as “profiteers, insulters, liars, thieves, incompetent tribalist embezzlers, and henchmen of the political police.” Kabila’s reemergence on the political scene via Goma follows his speech on Friday, May 23, in which he denounced President Félix Tshisekedi’s government for “populism, lies, arrogance, discrimination, and the stigmatisation of certain segments of the population.” Meanwhile, the Congolese Senate recently voted to strip Kabila of his immunity after the country’s military high court brought treason and war crimes charges against him. In a closed-door ballot held on Thursday, 88 senators voted in favor of the motion, five opposed it, and three votes were declared invalid. Kabila, who holds the title of senator for life, is accused of supporting the AFC/M23 rebels, who now control large areas in eastern DRC, including the provincial capitals of North and South Kivu. In April, the Congolese government initiated legal proceedings against Kabila and ordered the seizure of all his movable and immovable assets.
