Four people have died in a devastating two-vehicle crash on Central Queensland’s Capricorn Highway on Sunday morning, lifting the state’s road toll to ten since Friday. As ABC reports, the crash occurred around 10:50am between Blackwater and Comet in the Central Highlands region, approximately 230 kilometres west of Rockhampton. According to Queensland Police, two vehicles; one carrying four occupants and the other carrying two, collided before catching fire. Queensland Ambulance Service treated four individuals at the scene, but all were pronounced dead. Two men in their 20s, who were travelling in one of the vehicles, sustained critical injuries, including trauma to the chest and abdomen. Both were transported to Emerald Hospital in life-threatening condition. The Queensland Ambulance Service dispatched five crews, supported by two Queensland Fire and Emergency Services units. The RACQ Capricorn Rescue helicopter was also deployed but later stood down. The Capricorn Highway between Comet and Blackwater was closed on Sunday afternoon, with a 50-kilometre detour set up via Rileys Crossing Road and Blackwater Cooroorah Road, near Bedford Weir. Authorities advised that the detour route is not suitable for heavy vehicles. Queensland Police said further details were not immediately available due to the complexity of the crash. Investigations remain ongoing. This latest tragedy follows a separate fatal crash in Mackay on Friday night that claimed three lives, bringing Queensland’s road toll to ten in just three days.
