Google has introduced a major new feature to Gemini Notebook, formerly known as NotebookLM, allowing users to use digital books they have purchased through Google Play Books as sources for AI-powered research and learning. The new feature, called Expert Intelligence, expands Gemini Notebook beyond uploaded documents and web-based information by giving users the ability to draw knowledge directly from books they own. Using the feature is designed to be straightforward. Users can select an eligible book purchased through Google Play Books and use it as a source when interacting with Gemini Notebook. For example, someone with a cookbook could ask Gemini to create a meal plan based specifically on recipes and information contained in that book. The feature could be particularly useful for students, teachers, researchers and anyone who wants to quickly explore or understand the content of books they already own. What makes Expert Intelligence even more interesting is the range of formats Gemini Notebook can create from book content. Users can turn information from their books into infographics, Audio Overviews and quizzes, among other formats. This means a book can become more than something you simply read from beginning to end; AI can help transform its content into different learning materials that may make studying and revision easier. Google says the feature currently supports more than 100,000 titles, including books from major publishers such as Penguin Random House, Macmillan Publishers, O’Reilly Media and Johns Hopkins University Press. However, Expert Intelligence comes with an important limitation: users must own the book through Google Play Books to use it as a source. Sharing a Gemini Notebook with someone else does not automatically give that person access to the book’s content; they may also need to own or purchase the same title. For now, Expert Intelligence is available through Gemini Notebook on the app and web, while Google says it plans to bring the capability to the main Gemini app and AI Mode in Search in the future. If expanded as planned, the feature could turn digital books into powerful, interactive learning resources and change the way people combine traditional knowledge with artificial intelligence.
