General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and Senior Presidential Adviser for Special Operations, has once again called for the resignation of the Governor of Ituri Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Gen Muhoozi, who recently returned from a visit to Kinshasa where he met with DRC President Félix Tshisekedi and senior Congolese military officials concluded the trip with agreements to expand the activities of "Operation Shujaa," which aims to restore peace and security in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu. On Monday, June 23, 2025, he wrote on his X account that the Governor of Ituri should step down, stating that time is running out for him. "President Tshisekedi is safe. We, the Bachwezi, will protect him. However, the Governor of Ituri MUST GO! Time is running out for him," he wrote on X. Lt Gen Johny Nkashama Luboya has led Ituri since May 2021, when President Tshisekedi placed Ituri and North Kivu under a special military administration. This marks the second time this year that Gen Muhoozi has called for the resignation of Lt Gen Johny Nkashama Luboya. In April, Gen Muhoozi also demanded the governor’s resignation, accusing him of attempting to obstruct the operations of the Ugandan army against armed groups, including CODECO. At that time, Gen Muhoozi even threatened to arrest Gen Luboya.
