Ceasefire negotiations currently underway in Qatar between Hamas and Israel are facing significant roadblocks, with disagreements centering on the extent of Israeli military withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. According to sources familiar with the indirect discussions, both Palestinian and Israeli, these disputes have stalled progress toward an agreement based on a U.S.-backed proposal for a 60-day truce. Despite the setbacks, talks between Hamas and Israeli delegations are expected to continue. The discussions have been ongoing in Doha since Sunday in a renewed attempt to secure a ceasefire deal. A Palestinian source revealed to Reuters that Hamas has rejected the Israeli-proposed withdrawal maps. These maps would leave approximately 40% of Gaza’s territory, including the entire southern city of Rafah and additional areas in northern and eastern Gaza, under Israeli military control; terms Hamas finds unacceptable. In addition to disagreements over territorial withdrawal, challenges remain regarding the distribution of humanitarian aid and the provision of international guarantees. On the Israeli side, two sources also told Reuters that Hamas is demanding Israel revert to the military positions it held prior to resuming its offensive operations in March, positions that were in place during a previous ceasefire. Meanwhile, Al Jazeera reports that tension continues to escalate in the region. At least one person was killed in southern Lebanon following an Israeli airstrike as Lebanon’s Health Ministry confirmed. The country’s National News Agency reported that the strike targeted a residential home in the town of Khiam, which has been hit multiple times during Israel’s ongoing attacks against Hezbollah forces in the area. As of now, the Israeli military has not issued any official statement regarding the airstrike in Lebanon.
