Iran has issued a stern warning that it will hold the United States legally accountable for any Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities, following reports suggesting that Israel is preparing for a possible strike. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made the declaration in a letter to the United Nations, published Thursday by Agence France-Presse (AFP). His warning came just ahead of a scheduled meeting between Iranian and U.S. officials in Rome on Friday for a fifth round of Omani-mediated nuclear negotiations. “We believe that in the event of any attack on the nuclear facilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran by the Zionist regime, the U.S. government will also be involved and bear legal responsibility,” Araghchi stated in the letter. “Iran strongly warns against any adventurism by the Zionist regime and will respond decisively to any threat or unlawful act by this regime,” he added. Iran does not recognize Israel and typically refers to it as the “Zionist regime.” The warning follows a CNN report on Tuesday which claimed that Israel is actively making preparations to strike Iranian nuclear sites. The development has further heightened tensions as diplomatic efforts continue. The ongoing nuclear talks, which began on April 12, represent the highest level of engagement between Tehran and Washington since the United States unilaterally withdrew from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) under former President Donald Trump. Israel has consistently voiced opposition to the nuclear deal and has threatened military action if it deems Iran's nuclear advancement a security threat. That rhetoric has grown louder since the renewal of talks. On Thursday, Ali Mohammad Naini, spokesperson for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), echoed the warnings, stating that Israel would face a “devastating” retaliation in the event of an attack. “If the delusional Zionist regime commits a foolish act and launches an attack, it will definitely receive a devastating and decisive response in its small and vulnerable geography,” Naini said, according to Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency. Meanwhile, public support for Iran’s nuclear program was on display Thursday as demonstrators gathered near the Fordow nuclear enrichment facility south of Tehran. The crowd waved Iranian flags and chanted slogans including, “nuclear energy is our inalienable right” and “no compromise, no surrender, only confrontation with America.” The situation continues to escalate as diplomatic, military, and public sentiments converge, threatening to derail the fragile talks and push the region closer to conflict.
