A bus carrying mourners home from a funeral in southwestern Kenya overturned and plunged into a ditch on Friday evening, killing at least 25 people and injuring several others, authorities said. The bus was traveling from the western town of Kakamega to the city of Kisumu, where the accident occurred. According to Peter Maina, a regional traffic enforcement officer for Nyanza Province, the driver lost control of the vehicle as it approached a roundabout at high speed, causing it to plunge into a ditch. A 10-year-old girl was among the victims, he said. Initially, 29 people were reported injured in the crash, but four later died in the hospital, said Fredrick Ouma Oluga, the principal secretary in charge of medical services in Kenya. President William Ruto expressed condolences to the victims’ families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. “May the Almighty give strength to the families to bear the loss. We wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” he wrote on social media. He also urged traffic enforcement officers to act swiftly against those responsible for any negligence leading to the crash and to address traffic violations to ensure road safety across the country. Kenya has recently experienced a surge in road accidents. On Thursday, nine people were killed in another bus crash in Naivasha, Nakuru County. Police said the victims were among 32 workers traveling to their workplace when the bus collided with a train at a railway crossing.
