North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has watched missiles being test-fired from the country’s first-ever destroyer. This new warship is a 5,000-tonne vessel, said to have the most powerful weapons North Korea has ever put on a navy ship. The destroyer was launched last week at a ceremony in Nampo, a port on the country’s west coast. Kim Jong Un called the ship’s construction a big step forward in modernizing North Korea’s navy. According to North Korea’s official news agency, Kim observed the testing of several weapons from the ship. These included supersonic and strategic cruise missiles, anti-aircraft missiles, automatic guns, and electronic jamming guns. Kim praised the destroyer for having both strong attack weapons and good defenses. He also gave orders to speed up the process of adding nuclear weapons to the navy. He announced that the destroyer will begin active duty early next year. Kim also said his next goal is to build a nuclear-powered submarine, which would further strengthen North Korea’s naval power. Kim stated that these moves are necessary to protect North Korea against increasing threats from the United States and its allies.
