Belgium have named striker Romelu Lukaku in their 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, despite a difficult season marked by injury and limited playing time at club level.
The 33-year-old Napoli forward has not started a match this season and has made only seven substitute appearances, scoring once against Verona in February. Lukaku has also spent the past two months in Belgium recovering from a hamstring injury.
Despite his fitness concerns, coach Rudi Garcia has trusted the country’s all-time top scorer, who has netted 89 international goals in 124 appearances, to lead the attack at the tournament.
Lukaku last played for Belgium in a World Cup qualifier against Wales in June 2025, but his experience and goal record have been seen as vital for a squad heading into a tough Group G alongside Egypt, Iran, and New Zealand.
Belgium’s squad also includes key names such as Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, and Axel Witsel, all set for their fourth consecutive World Cup appearance.
Coach Garcia also added young talent Matias Fernandez-Pardo as attacking cover, while Sporting defender Zeno Debast was included despite injury doubts. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois returns in a major boost for the team.
Belgium will be hoping their blend of experienced stars and emerging talent can deliver a strong campaign despite concerns over Lukaku’s match fitness.
