Mali and Burkina Faso have announced new measures restricting the entry of citizens of the United States into their territories. The decision is a response to action taken by the U.S. government on December 16, 2025, when it placed both countries on a list subjecting their citizens to stricter entry requirements when traveling to the United States. The United States justified its decision by accusing Mali and Burkina Faso of failing to implement effective measures to combat armed groups. Washington argued that this security gap could allow individuals to enter the U.S. and pose potential risks. On Tuesday, December 30, 2025, the foreign ministers of the two West African nations issued separate statements announcing reciprocal measures against U.S. citizens, mirroring those imposed by the United States on their nationals. In a statement, Mali’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the move was based on the principle of reciprocity. The ministry stated that, with immediate effect, the Malian government would apply to U.S. citizens the same requirements and regulations imposed on Malian nationals seeking entry into the United States. Similarly, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, announced that U.S. citizens would no longer benefit from facilitated entry into Burkina Faso. Relations between the United States and the two countries have been strained in recent years. Washington has criticized Mali and Burkina Faso following military coups that brought Colonel Assimi Goïta to power in Mali and Captain Ibrahim Traoré in Burkina Faso. Since then, both countries have reduced cooperation with Western partners and shifted their diplomatic alignment toward Russia.
