A man died and another person is fighting for life after a white Isuzu truck drove the wrong way down the Bruce Highway and crashed head-on into oncoming traffic near Burpengary on Tuesday night.

Police responded to the horror crash scene on Queensland's major highway shortly after 10:30 p.m. on February 17, 2026, after multiple emergency calls reported vehicles traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.

Witnesses said several vehicles appeared to be involved in some kind of chase before the crash. The white Isuzu truck was traveling south in the northbound lanes—directly toward oncoming traffic—when it slammed into a white Honda Accord traveling north in the correct direction.

The Honda burst into flames after the impact. The driver of the Honda, whose name has not been released, died at the scene.

The truck driver was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition.

Other drivers on the highway at the time were forced to swerve and take evasive action to avoid being hit as the truck sped toward them on the wrong side of the road.

Police are investigating what caused the truck to drive the wrong way and whether other vehicles were actually chasing it or if they were simply trying to warn other drivers about the danger.

The Bruce Highway is Queensland's main north-south highway, running from Brisbane to Cairns. The stretch near Burpengary, about 35 kilometers north of Brisbane, is normally busy with commuter traffic.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances leading to the crash. Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage to contact them.
