A 23-year-old Mexican beauty influencer, Valeria Marquez, was tragically shot and killed while live streaming on TikTok, the Jalisco state prosecutor's office reported. The incident occurred in Marquez’s beauty salon in Guadalajara, a city in western Mexico. According to the prosecutor's office, a man entered the salon and allegedly shot her. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but the case is being treated as a femicide, which refers to the killing of women due to their gender. In Mexico, violence against women is a widespread issue. The United Nations reports that, on average, 10 women or girls are murdered every day in Mexico by family members or intimate partners. Marquez was livestreaming moments before her death. She was sitting at a table in her salon holding a stuffed animal when the shooter approached her. "It was a normal livestream," one of her fans said. "But suddenly, everything went silent, and the next thing we know, we saw the phone drop." Seconds later, the livestream ended when another person at the scene picked up her phone. Local media reported that the attacker was pretending to bring a gift before opening fire, according to BBC News. The police arrived at the scene at around 6:30 PM local time and confirmed her death. "We’re still investigating the details of what happened, but we know she was killed by a man," said the state prosecutor’s office. Valeria Marquez had a significant online following, with nearly 200,000 fans across TikTok and Instagram. Fans were devastated by the news of her death, expressing shock and disbelief on social media. Juan José Frangie, the mayor of Zapopan, where the beauty salon was located, shared his concern over the violence. "A femicide is the worst thing that can happen," he said. He also mentioned that the authorities had no record of Marquez asking for help due to threats against her. Forensic experts are currently investigating the case to gather more information about the shooting. Authorities have not yet named a suspect in the case, and fans and family members are demanding justice for the young influencer.
