Rwanda’s Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) says investigations are ongoing into 243 students suspected of cheating in the 2025/2026 national examinations. The figure was disclosed on August 20, 2026, as the ministry announced the results of the national examinations.
State Minister for Education, Irere Claudette, said the cases cannot be treated as confirmed cheating until thorough investigations are completed. She explained that investigators are examining not only the students involved but also whether teachers, invigilators or other individuals may have assisted in the alleged malpractice.
According to the ministry, students suspected of cheating may have their results withheld while investigations are conducted. If the investigation establishes that a student did not commit any offence, their results can subsequently be released. However, students found guilty will face sanctions in accordance with Rwanda’s examination regulations.
Rwanda’s national examination rules strictly prohibit cheating and assisting candidates to cheat. Depending on the circumstances, offenders can be removed from the examination, receive zero marks, and in serious cases face further legal action. MINEDUC says the investigations are intended to ensure that anyone found responsible including those who may have helped students cheat is held accountable under the law.
