The official visit of Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to Islamabad, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, has further strengthened bilateral relations between the two countries, as evidenced by his meetings with key federal ministers from the host nation. On Sunday, April 20, Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe began his two-day official visit following an invitation from his Pakistani counterpart. During his stay, Minister Nduhungirehe held a bilateral meeting with Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Pakistan. The two ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on diplomatic training, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening people-to-people ties between Rwanda and Pakistan. Minister Nduhungirehe was also received by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. Their discussions focused on enhancing both bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the two nations. The Rwandan Minister met with Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Defence, to discuss ways to strengthen defence and security cooperation, building on recent high-level engagements in this sector. Additionally, Minister Nduhungirehe held talks with Dr. Shezra Mansab Ali Khan Kharal, Minister of State for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination. He was briefed on Pakistan’s efforts to build climate resilience and explored opportunities for collaboration in environmental protection and disaster management.

At the conclusion of his visit, Minister Nduhungirehe officially inaugurated the High Commission of Rwanda to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The ceremony brought together senior government officials, diplomats, media representatives, and private sector stakeholders in Islamabad. Opened in 2024, the mission is part of Rwanda’s expanding diplomatic network, which now includes 49 diplomatic missions across five continents. Minister Nduhungirehe expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to the Rwandan delegation during the visit. Rwanda and Pakistan, whose diplomatic relationship spans 62 years, continue to collaborate actively in various sectors, including trade, health, security, and investment. In January 2025, the two countries signed an MoU on Bilateral Political Consultations, laying the groundwork for deeper cooperation. This recent engagement marks a significant step in strengthening the partnership and exploring the vast potential for collaboration in the years ahead.
