At least 25 students have been abducted from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga town, Kebbi State, after armed men launched a midnight attack on Monday. The incident took place in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area and has thrown the community into deep fear and mourning.
According to eyewitnesses, the heavily armed attackers invaded the school around midnight, shooting sporadically before heading to the students’ dormitories. The vice principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, was killed during the assault. Local residents said he lost his life while attempting to protect the students from being taken.
Police spokesperson CSP Nafiu Abubakar confirmed that 25 girls were kidnapped during the raid, adding that security agencies have already begun coordinated search and rescue operations across surrounding forests and communities. He assured the public that efforts are underway to bring the students home safely.
Kebbi State’s Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris, also stated that Deputy Governor Umar Tafida had been dispatched to the affected area to represent Governor Nasir Idris, who was out of the state at the time of the attack. Tafida is expected to meet with grieving families, assess the level of damage, and coordinate an immediate government response.
Residents have described the aftermath as a day of heartbreak, with prayers being held across the community for the safe return of the abducted girls and for the repose of Makuku’s soul.
This attack adds to a growing pattern of school abductions in northern Nigeria. In February 2021, 317 girls were kidnapped from Jangebe in Zamfara State. That same month, dozens of students and staff were taken from Government Science College, Kagara, in Niger State. In December 2020, 300 boys were abducted from Kankara in Katsina State, while earlier incidents in Dapchi (2018) and Chibok (2014) drew international outrage.
