Guinea’s President, Gen. Mamadi Doumbouya, has returned home before completing his holiday in Greece, following growing public concern and speculation about his health. Doumbouya arrived at Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport in Conakry on Friday, 14 August, where he was welcomed by large crowds. Thousands of residents reportedly lined major roads to see the president as his convoy moved through the capital. His return came after days of speculation on social media about his health. Some reports focused on changes in his appearance and claims that he had lost weight, prompting concern among many Guineans about his wellbeing. The Presidency had earlier confirmed that President Doumbouya was in Greece for a private annual holiday with his family. He travelled there on 3 August, with the popular island of Mykonos reportedly among the places he planned to visit. Officials said publicly announcing details of his holiday was intended to prevent confusion about the president’s activities while he was abroad. During his absence, government officials maintained that state institutions continued operating normally and that there was no disruption to the country’s governance. The Presidency has not stated that Doumbouya returned because of an emergency health situation. His appearance in Conakry was instead widely seen as reassuring the public amid the rumours surrounding his health. President Doumbouya came to power following a military coup in September 2021 that removed then-President Alpha Condé. He has since led Guinea under a military transitional government. His early return has renewed attention on the importance of clear official communication, particularly when rumours about the health of a national leader spread rapidly on social media.
