French President Emmanuel Macron has faced condemnation from international leaders following his announcement that France will recognize Palestine as a state. On Thursday, July 24, President Macron declared that France would formally recognize the State of Palestine, marking a bold diplomatic move amid growing global outrage over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. “True to its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine,” Macron stated. He added that he would make the formal announcement at the United Nations General Assembly in September. “The urgent priority is to end the war in Gaza and deliver aid to the civilian population. Peace is possible,” he said. Macron further emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and substantial humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza. He also called for the demilitarization of Hamas and efforts to secure and rebuild Gaza. Following the announcement, several international leaders mainly those allied with Israel condemned Macron's decision. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a strong statement opposing the move: “We strongly condemn President Macron’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state next to Tel Aviv in the wake of the October 7 massacre. Such a move rewards terror and risks creating another Iranian proxy, just as Gaza became. A Palestinian state under these conditions would serve as a launchpad to annihilate Israel—not to live in peace beside it.” The United States also expressed strong opposition to Macron’s plan to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly. “This reckless decision only serves Hamas propaganda and sets back peace. It is a slap in the face to the victims of October 7,” said U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett also criticized the decision, calling it a “moral collapse.” “It rewards mass murder and sends a message to Islamist terrorists: kill Jews, and the world will hand you a state. This shameful decision will end up in the dustbin of history,” Bennett said.
