The Swiss appeared on course for victory after Breel Embolo's first-half penalty gave them the lead, but their failure to convert numerous chances proved costly as Qatar struck in the dying moments to earn a memorable result before a crowd of 67,966 at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
Switzerland dominated large portions of the contest and took the lead in the 17th minute when Embolo calmly converted from the penalty spot. The award sparked debate, with questions raised about a possible offside in the build-up, although VAR upheld the decision.
The European side controlled possession and created several opportunities to extend their advantage. Embolo, Ruben Vargas, Granit Xhaka, and substitute Johan Manzambi all came close, but Switzerland lacked the clinical finishing needed to put the match beyond Qatar's reach.
Qatar struggled to create clear chances for much of the game but gradually grew into the contest during the final stages. Edmilson Junior and Ahmed Alaa provided glimpses of attacking threat as the hosts pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
Their persistence paid off in the fifth minute of added time. Homam El Amin delivered a superb cross from the left, and Khoukhi rose highest at the far post to power a header beyond Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, sending Qatar's players and supporters into celebration.
The dramatic late goal marked Qatar's first goal of the tournament and denied Switzerland what had looked like a deserved victory.
Despite dropping points, Switzerland will take encouragement from their overall performance but will regret their missed opportunities. Qatar, meanwhile, showed resilience and determination to secure a valuable draw that could prove significant in the race for qualification from Group B.
