One victim, a man believed to be aged in his 30s or 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene despite urgent efforts by paramedics. Two other people, a 22-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman were rushed to hospital in critical condition, where they remain under intensive care.

Attack Sparks Chaos in Busy Shopping Area

The stabbings unfolded in a crowded commercial strip, with two attacks reported inside a local shop or mini-mart, and a third occurring outside on the street. Witnesses described scenes of panic as shoppers and commuters watched emergency crews respond amid the morning rush.

NSW Police Superintendent Simon Glasser said investigators believe the victims were not known to the attacker. “This appears to be a random incident,” he told reporters. “There is no indication at this stage that this was targeted or that the victims had any connection to the alleged offender.”

Suspect Arrested Within Minutes

Police say the alleged attacker fled on foot but was apprehended quickly behind a nearby home on Smythe Street, just minutes after the incident. The man was taken to Granville Police Station for questioning. Authorities have confirmed the suspect is known to police, mainly for minor offences linked to previous mental health-related incidents. His identity and age have not yet been released publicly, and no formal charges have been laid as investigations continue.

Community Left Shocked

The incident has deeply unsettled residents in Merrylands, a diverse suburb known for its family-oriented community atmosphere. Police have established a major crime scene, with forensic teams examining evidence and officers conducting interviews with witnesses.

Superintendent Glasser said police believed it was a random attack.

Superintendent Glasser reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat. “This is an isolated event,” he said. “We urge anyone who was in the area or who has dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward.”

Investigation Ongoing

The attack comes amid wider national concerns about public safety and mental health support, though police stress it is too early to draw broader conclusions. NSW Police are expected to provide further updates as the investigation develops.
