Rwanda Mines, Petroleum, and Gas Board (RMB) on November 25 announced the resumption of beryllium exportation after a four-month suspension.

In August 2014, RMB informed the general public and all mineral exporters that the exportation of beryllium had been suspended due to multiple reports of illegal mining and trading of beryllium during that time.

The public notice released by RMB on Thursday, August 8th, stated, "This decision follows numerous reports of illegal mining and trading of beryllium, as well as associated social unrest and conflicts."

In a public notice dated November 22, the regulator said that the decision to lift the embargo came after inspection, due diligence, and stock assessment across various mines and exporter premises.

“All mineral exporters are strictly required to adhere to the provided mineral certification and export procedures,” the RMB said, adding that certification would prioritize inspected stock, followed by new production, in compliance with regulations.

These procedures include traceable mineral sources and proof of purchase, it said.

“Non-compliant beryl stock will be seized, and punitive measures will be taken as stipulated in the mining law on mining and quarry,” the regulator said.

Beryllium mineral refers to the naturally occurring mineral known as beryl, which consists mainly of beryllium aluminum cyclosilicate.

Beryl is a gemstone of various colors such as green, blue, yellow, or white and is widely used in jewelry. However, beryllium itself is a lightweight, rigid yet brittle metal with unique properties including high thermal conductivity and low density.

It is primarily used as an alloying agent in the production of various materials including aircraft and automotive components, missiles, spacecraft, and x-ray machines.
