Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMB) informed the general public and all mineral exporters that the exportation of beryllium has been suspended due to multiple reports of illegal mining and trading of beryllium.

The public notice released by RMB on Thursday, August 8th stated, "This decision follows numerous reports of illegal mining and trading of beryllium, as well as associated social unrest and conflicts."

RMB emphasized that during this suspension period, a comprehensive review of the reported cases of illegal activities will be conducted, and improved export procedures will be implemented to streamline the beryllium business.

"In accordance with Law n° 072/2024 of 26/06/2024 on mining and quarry operations, specifically Articles 64 and 65, all mineral exporters are strictly required to purchase minerals only from licensed mining companies," read the statement from RMB.

Beryllium mineral refers to the naturally occurring mineral known as beryl, which consists mainly of beryllium aluminum cyclosilicate.

Beryl is a gemstone of various colors such as green, blue, yellow, or white and is widely used in jewelry. However, beryllium itself is a lightweight, rigid yet brittle metal with unique properties including high thermal conductivity and low density.

It is primarily used as an alloying agent in the production of various materials including aircraft and automotive components, missiles, spacecraft, and x-ray machines.
