Russia launched a new wave of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine on Tuesday, killing at least three people, including a child, and forcing emergency power cuts nationwide, Ukrainian authorities said. The strikes came as Ukrainians prepare to mark Christmas amid the ongoing war. According to government officials, the combined attacks heavily targeted energy facilities, particularly in western regions of the country. The strikes followed recent U.S.-led diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the nearly four-year conflict. Local authorities reported that two people, including a four-year-old child, were killed in the central Zhytomyr region. Another person died outside the capital, Kyiv, where at least five others were injured. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the attack involved more than 30 missiles and around 650 drones and affected at least 13 regions. “This Russian strike sends a very clear signal about Russia’s priorities,” Zelenskiy wrote on X. “Putin still refuses to stop the killing. That means the world is not applying enough pressure on Russia. Now is the time to respond.” Russia has intensified attacks on Ukraine’s energy and logistics infrastructure in recent months, increasing pressure on Kyiv as discussions continue over a possible U.S.-backed peace deal that could require difficult compromises. Over the weekend, peace talks held in Miami brought together U.S., Ukrainian, and European officials, alongside separate contacts with Russian representatives, as Washington assessed the prospects for a negotiated settlement. In a related development, U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, said recent discussions with Kirill Dmitriev, an envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, were constructive. He noted that progress is being made in Washington-led efforts to find a solution to the war in Ukraine.
