Dr. Lassina Zerbo, Chairman of the Rwanda Atomic Energy Board (RAEB), presided over a high-level roundtable discussion in Washington, DC, addressing the deployment of nuclear energy in Africa and the role of U.S. engagement in supporting the continent's energy transition. The closed-door meeting convened key stakeholders from the U.S. government, private sector, and energy experts to explore collaborative opportunities aimed at advancing Africa's nuclear energy sector. With Africa's demand for sustainable and reliable energy steadily rising, nuclear power is increasingly viewed as a pivotal solution to the continent's long-term energy needs. Dr. Zerbo reiterated Rwanda's commitment to harnessing nuclear technology to drive economic development, strengthen energy security, and promote environmental sustainability. “Africa’s energy transition requires strategic partnerships, and the U.S. can play a critical role in ensuring nuclear energy becomes a viable and safe solution for our continent,” stated Dr. Zerbo. He underscored the necessity of technology transfer, capacity building, and infrastructure investment as fundamental elements in accelerating Africa's nuclear energy development. The roundtable served as a precursor to the forthcoming Africa-U.S. Nuclear Energy Summit, which Rwanda is set to host in June this year. The summit will gather African and U.S. policymakers, industry leaders, and nuclear energy experts to facilitate dialogue and reinforce cooperation on nuclear energy advancement. Rwanda continues to champion the peaceful application of nuclear technology in alignment with its Vision 2050 strategy, which seeks to diversify the country's energy mix and promote sustainable industrialization. RAEB maintains close collaboration with international partners, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to ensure the safe and effective implementation of nuclear energy projects. The engagement between Rwanda and the U.S. represents a significant milestone in strengthening partnerships that drive innovation, investment, and energy security across Africa. As nuclear energy gains momentum on the continent, such collaborations will be instrumental in shaping Africa's sustainable energy future.
