A drone strike on a nursery school in Kalogi, a town in southern Kordofan, has killed 50 people, including 33 children. The attack occurred on December 4, 2025, and was attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which are fighting government troops. In a separate statement, the RSF accused government forces of burning a market in Darfur and destroying a fuel depot and other infrastructure near the Chad border. The United Nations children’s agency condemned the attack, calling the killing of children in schools an unacceptable atrocity. Sudan’s conflict stems from a power struggle between the army chief and de facto leader, Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, and his former deputy, Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, widely known as Hemedti. The two men, once allies, overthrew longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir in 2019 and later removed a civilian-led government in a 2021 coup. Their partnership collapsed over disagreements about integrating the RSF into the national army and the transition to civilian rule. Since the war began in April 2023, Sudan has plunged into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. The United Nations estimates that more than 14 million people have been displaced, famine is spreading, and disease outbreaks continue to worsen. The U.N. has recorded more than 40,000 deaths, though aid agencies believe the actual toll is much higher.
