Dar es Salaam, August 18, 2025 – The Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court in Dar es Salaam has banned live broadcasting and online streaming of opposition leader Tundu Lissu’s treason trial, citing the need to protect the identities of civilian witnesses. Lissu, who is defending himself after dismissing his attorneys, rejected the decision, arguing it undermines judicial transparency. His party, CHADEMA, and supporters also criticized the ruling, raising concerns about political freedoms ahead of the October elections. Vice President Philip Mpango announced that Tanzania has invited the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to observe the presidential elections scheduled for October 29, 2025. He emphasized that preparations are underway to ensure a free, fair, and transparent process aimed at strengthening international confidence in the country’s electoral system. On the economic front, the Bank of Tanzania projects growth of about 6% in 2025, up from 5.4% last year, supported by increased public spending, mining, and infrastructure development. The central bank has lowered its policy rate to 5.75% for the third quarter, signaling confidence in macroeconomic stability and the private sector. Tanzania is also co-hosting the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with Kenya and Uganda. On August 16, the national team played the Central African Republic in Dar es Salaam as part of the tournament, which showcases local football talent and strengthens regional unity. In addition, the government has inaugurated five Special Economic Zones near Dar es Salaam, targeting sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, automotive, and agri-processing. Investors will benefit from tax breaks, land provision, and fast-track permits as part of efforts to drive industrial growth and job creation.
