Tanzania’s First Gentleman, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died at the age of about 70, after a period of illness. Hafidh died on Monday, September 7, 2026, at around 8:00 a.m. at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart-related condition. His death was announced by Tanzania’s Vice President, Deogratius Ndejembi, who conveyed condolences to President Samia, her family, relatives, friends and the people of Tanzania. He also confirmed that funeral preparations were underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar. A private life beside Tanzania’s first female President Hafidh Ameir Hassan was known for maintaining a relatively private life despite being married to one of Tanzania’s most prominent political figures. He married Samia Suluhu Hassan in 1978, long before she rose to the highest office in the country. The couple remained together for decades as Samia progressed from her early public-service career in Zanzibar to becoming Vice President and eventually President of Tanzania. The couple had four children  three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, followed a path into public service and politics. She is a Member of Parliament for Makunduchi and currently serves as Deputy Minister for Education, Science and Technology. Tanzania’s official parliamentary and government records confirm her public-service roles. From agricultural professional to First Gentleman Hafidh built his professional career largely outside politics. Reports describe him as an agricultural professional and academic who worked in the agriculture sector before retiring. His public profile changed significantly in March 2021, when Samia became Tanzania’s first female president following the death of President John Magufuli. With Samia’s rise to the presidency, Hafidh became Tanzania’s first male spouse of a sitting president and was widely referred to as the country’s First Gentleman. His role was largely ceremonial, and he generally stayed away from political affairs and the public spotlight. Unlike spouses of some other African heads of state, Hafidh rarely sought a prominent public role. He was occasionally seen accompanying President Samia at official functions but largely maintained a quiet family life. His death leaves Tanzania mourning The announcement of Hafidh’s death has prompted condolences from across the region. Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his sympathy to President Samia, describing Hafidh as her lifelong companion and a beloved father to their children. Ruto said Kenya stood with Tanzania during the period of mourning. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, also expressed condolences to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania, wishing them strength and comfort following the loss. Hafidh’s death does not affect Tanzania’s constitutional leadership or create a succession issue. President Samia remains the country’s head of state. As preparations for his burial continue in Kizimkazi, Tanzania is mourning a man who spent decades beside the country’s first female president while choosing to remain largely outside the political spotlight.
