Location and Relief

Rwanda is located in Central Africa, between latitudes 1°04’ and 2°51’ south and longitudes 28°45’ and 31°15’ east. It is bordered by Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east, Burundi to the south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. Rwanda has a total surface area of 26,338 square kilometers. The country's terrain is hilly and mountainous, with an average elevation of 1,700 meters. The highest point is Mount Karisimbi, which rises to 4,507 meters above sea level. Volcanic mountains dominate the northern region, while the central plateau consists mostly of rolling hills. The eastern region is relatively flat, with elevations generally below 1,500 meters.

Administrative Structure

Rwanda operates under a two-tier system of government—central and local—consisting of six administrative entities reorganized during the 2005 reform. The country is divided into four provinces (Southern, Eastern, Western, and Northern) and the City of Kigali, which serves as the capital. These are further subdivided into 30 districts. The districts are divided into 416 sectors, which are further divided into 2,148 cells. Finally, the cells are subdivided into 14,837 villages. Each administrative level has designated leadership and responsibilities, all aligned toward the country's development goals.

Weather Conditions

Rwanda enjoys a temperate climate with favorable daily weather conditions throughout the year. The warmest regions have average annual temperatures between 20°C and 24°C, while cooler areas range from below 17°C to 19°C. The country receives an average annual rainfall of approximately 1,250 mm.

Language

Kinyarwanda is the national language and mother tongue of the Rwandan people. However, due to the country’s strong education system, many Rwandans are also proficient in English, French, Kiswahili, and Rwandan Sign Language. This multilingualism makes it easy for visitors to communicate regardless of where they come from.

Tourist Attractions

While Rwanda is famously home to the endangered mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park (part of the Virunga Mountains), the "Land of a Thousand Hills" offers many other tourist attractions. These include Akagera National Park, known for its savannah wildlife; Nyungwe National Park, famous for its rainforest and canopy walks; the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza; the Ethnographic Museum in Huye District; and scenic water bodies like Lake Kivu, which features clean beaches and relaxing lakeside resorts.
