Three commercial vessels were fired upon Wednesday in the Strait of Hormuz , with one ship sustaining significant damage, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). UKMTO said it had received multiple reports of an incident involving gunfire directed at vessels transiting the strait, one of the world’s most critical energy corridors. A Liberia-flagged container ship was struck, with damage reported to its bridge. Two additional vessels were also targeted but were able to continue their voyages. All crew members are safe, and no casualties have been reported, UKMTO said.
Three commercial vessels were fired upon Wednesday in the Strait of Hormuz, with one ship sustaining significant damage, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
UKMTO did not attribute responsibility for the attack. However, security analysts tracking Gulf naval movements have noted increased Iranian patrol activity in the area. There has been no immediate official confirmation from Iran.
The incident comes amid escalating tensions following U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities earlier this month and increased naval presence in the Gulf.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, roughly 20% of global petroleum liquids consumption passes through the Strait of Hormuz, making any disruption in the waterway a major concern for global energy markets.
The reported attack follows a U.S. decision on Tuesday to extend a temporary pause in further military strikes to allow for diplomatic engagement, though no formal agreement has yet been announced.
Coalition naval forces operating in the Gulf have not yet issued a statement on the incident.
