Federal law generally prohibits living presidents from appearing on U.S. coins. However, the Treasury Secretary may authorize gold commemorative coins not intended for general circulation. Officials say this exception allowed the Trump coin’s approval.
If produced, Trump would become one of the few living presidents depicted on a U.S. coin. The last was Calvin Coolidge in 1926, on a commemorative half dollar marking the nation’s 150th anniversary.

The approval has drawn criticism from coin design experts and observers. Members of the bipartisan Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee did not endorse the Trump coin, arguing it deviates from longstanding coinage traditions and established review processes. Democratic lawmakers also objected, saying the coin politicizes a federal symbol. The decision has prompted comparisons to past administrations’ legacy-building initiatives.
Brandon Beach, the current U.S. Treasurer, praised the design, saying it “represents the enduring spirit of our country and democracy” and that Trump’s profile is “emblematic for the front of such coins.”

The U.S. Mint will now move forward with production planning. Final specifications, release dates, and pricing have not been publicly announced. The coin is part of a broader slate of commemorative issues marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.
