The highly anticipated meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin ended without any agreement to bring an end to the three-year war between Russia and Ukraine. On Friday, August 15, 2025, in Alaska, President Trump hosted his Russian counterpart. The summit was convened to explore ways to end the war Russia has been waging against Ukraine since 2022, after Trump had repeatedly expressed his wish to meet Putin face-to-face on the issue. It was the first time the Russian president had set foot on Western soil—either in Europe or America—since launching the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. After three hours of private talks, the two leaders held a press conference where President Putin expressed his satisfaction with the reception he received in Alaska. “We are close neighbours, and it’s a fact,” Putin said. Putin added that the meeting with Trump was long overdue and voiced hope that their discussions would help achieve peace in Ukraine. “We expect that Kyiv and European capitals will perceive that constructively and that they won’t throw a wrench in the works,” Putin said. “They will not make any attempts to use some backroom dealings to conduct provocations to torpedo the nascent progress,” he added. President Donald Trump stated that although he and Putin had agreed on many issues, no formal deal had been reached. “There were many, many points that we agreed on. Most of them, I would say. A couple of big ones that we haven’t quite got there, but we’ve made some headway,” Trump said. “So there is no deal until there is a deal,” Trump said. He added that he would call NATO leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to brief them on the outcome of the summit.
