President Donald Trump on Tuesday assured that U.S. troops would not be deployed to help defend Ukraine against Russia, clarifying remarks from the previous day in which he appeared to leave the possibility open. Speaking in a morning interview on Fox News’ 'Fox & Friends', Trump also said Ukraine’s ambitions of joining NATO and reclaiming Crimea from Russia were “impossible.” The comments followed hours of talks at the White House on Monday between Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and several European leaders aimed at advancing negotiations to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. While addressing journalists after the discussions, Trump did not rule out sending U.S. forces as part of a European-led security arrangement for Kyiv, a key demand from Zelenskyy. Trump also pointed to his recent meeting in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying Putin had shown openness to the concept of security guarantees for Ukraine. Pressed Tuesday on what assurances he could give that American troops would not be sent to Ukraine during his presidency or beyond, Trump responded: “Well, you have my assurance, and I’m president.”
