Two suspected terrorists, including an alleged female suicide bomber, were killed in an explosion on Tuesday, June 2, in Munyonyo, near a church, as Uganda heightened security ahead of Martyrs Day, the country’s largest religious gathering. The blast occurred near the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine, a historic Catholic site in a lakeside suburb of Kampala, where a small congregation had gathered for early morning prayers. Colonel Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information, said the explosion resulted from an intelligence-led counter-terrorism operation by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). “A UPDF counter-terrorism unit intercepted and neutralized two armed terrorists in Munyonyo, an upscale suburb of the city,” Col. Magezi said in a statement. “It was an intelligence-led operation, and the security services remain on high alert to ensure that the Martyrs Day celebrations proceed without disruption.” The incident occurred more than 30 kilometers from the main Martyrs Day events in Wakiso District, where over two million people were expected to gather at the Namugongo Catholic and Anglican shrines to commemorate Ugandan Christians executed for their faith between 1885 and 1887. As of 11:00 a.m. local time, the mass and services were proceeding without interruption. President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni were attending prayers at the Anglican shrine in Namugongo.
