UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has strongly denounced the fatal attack on two Israeli embassy staff members in Washington, DC, labelling the incident as antisemitic. “I thoroughly condemn the antisemitic attack outside the Israeli embassy in Washington DC,” Starmer said, according to the PA news agency. “Antisemitism is an evil we must stamp out wherever it appears. My thoughts are with their colleagues, family and loved ones, and as always, I stand in solidarity with the Jewish community.” A spokesperson for Downing Street reaffirmed the Prime Minister's stance, stating that Starmer “stands in solidarity with the Jewish community here in the UK.” The UK government, the spokesperson added, has extended its “full support to the Israeli embassy in London.” In a further statement, the Prime Minister’s official spokesperson noted: “As you know, we continue to provide around £18 million a year in funding for protective security measures for Jewish community sites in the UK.” While expressing deep concern over the killings, the spokesperson clarified that the government’s policy towards Israel’s actions in Gaza would remain unchanged. However, he emphasized that the attack “does not take away at all from the fact that antisemitism is an evil that must be stamped out wherever it appears.” UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy also condemned the incident in a post on X (formerly Twitter), calling it an “appalling” act: “Horrified by the killing of two Israeli embassy staff in DC. We condemn this appalling, antisemitic crime. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and colleagues at this awful time.” The condemnations come amid heightened security concerns and ongoing efforts to combat antisemitism both domestically and internationally.
