A foot patrol of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon has accused Israel of shooting at them, saying the country continues to behave inappropriately, an act Israel acknowledged but described as a mistake caused by poor weather conditions. According to the UN peacekeeping mission, on November 16, 2025, bursts of heavy artillery struck an area just five meters from the UNIFIL blue helmets, who were forced to retreat quickly and take shelter in the surrounding terrain. Mission representatives contacted the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) through established communication channels and requested that they cease firing, UNIFIL said in a press release. The patrol was able to leave safely half an hour later, once the tank had withdrawn to IDF positions. "Fortunately, no one was injured," the statement said, adding that the attack constituted a serious violation of Security Council Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006 to resolve the war between Israel and the Hezbollah militia. Israel, for its part, confirmed that its soldiers had fired shots but insisted they were not targeting UN troops; rather, they were attempting to deter two suspects in the El Hamames area. An investigation later determined that the individuals seen by Israeli soldiers were actually two UN peacekeepers, who had been mistaken for hostile actors due to fog. This is the third such incident in the past three months. On September 2, IDF drones dropped four grenades near UNIFIL peacekeepers who were clearing roadblocks obstructing access to a UN position near the “Blue Line,” the buffer zone between Israel and Lebanon patrolled by UNIFIL.
