Albuquerque, N.M. — Actor and film director Timothy Busfield, best known for his roles in The West Wing, Field of Dreams, and Thirtysomething, was indicted Friday by a New Mexico grand jury on four counts of criminal sexual contact of a child.

The 68-year-old is accused of inappropriately touching two boys, ages 7 and 8 at the time, on multiple occasions between November 2022 and spring 2024 while working as a director on the Fox series The Cleaning Lady. Busfield has strongly denied the allegations.

He surrendered to authorities in Albuquerque on January 13 after a warrant was issued. At a detention hearing last month, prosecutors sought to keep him in jail pending trial, but Judge David Murphy ordered his release with conditions, including no unsupervised contact with minors, no contact with the alleged victims or their families, and no discussion of the case with witnesses.

Busfield’s attorney, Larry Stein, rejected the charges, saying the indictment proves little. “A grand jury will indict a ham sandwich,” Stein said, adding that his client intends to fight the case in court.

The defense has argued that the accusations stem from retaliation after the boys lost roles on The Cleaning Lady. The show’s director of photography testified he saw no inappropriate behavior, and Warner Bros. said an internal investigation found no evidence supporting the claims.

Prosecutors, however, noted previous sexual misconduct allegations against Busfield dating back to 1994, though none led to criminal charges. Judge Murphy said he gave those past claims limited weight.

Each charge carries a minimum three-year sentence. The case will be handled by the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Special Victims Unit. Busfield is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
